Day 40: October 26

When I arrived at the hospital, I had a little bit of a scare as Sam's stomach was looking a bit full.  His nurse and Theresa were concerned enough to order an XRAY, as a big tummy can be an early sign of NEC (Necrotizing enterocolitis).  NEC is the thing we fear the most right now, so it was a bit tense for the first 30 minutes I was there.  After looking at his film, Theresa was convinced that it was not NEC but a tummy full of air from the CPAP machine.  The best solution to that was for me to hold him as he gets off the CPAP and he likes to toot while I am holding him.  So, that's what we did.  Sam spent the first 25 minutes I was holding him tooting- just as we hoped.

For those keeping track of Sam's weight gain, he now weighs in at 2 lbs 9.1 ozs- a weight gain of over a pound and only 400-ish grams short of doubling his birth weight.  With the increase in his feeds, he will double his birth weight in no time.

Speaking of his feeds, it seems I had one of Sam's goals for the week a bit off... it turns out they are going to get him up to 20 MLs per feed not 15 MLs.  As of tonight he was up to 17 MLs so he will be at his goal in a day and a half.  His HA drip is still going, but Theresa thinks they will stop it tomorrow, which means his PICC line will be coming out then as well. I am very much looking forward to that.

And now for you moment of zen:
